In 2004, it was determined that schools within the San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD) could benefit significantly by the creation of a single educational foundation that would coordinate and strengthen school fundraising activities. Experience and research showed that educational foundations, created and managed by local business and citizens, can improve opportunities for students at the local level and provide a valuable link between the community and its schools.

From that idea, the Valley of Discovery Educational Foundation (VDEF) was created with the single purpose of improving the educational experience for students in SMUSD schools. Since that time, VDEF has made significant strides toward that goal, including obtaining tax exempt status with the IRS as a charitable not-for-profit corporation, and raising substantial sums of money for San Marcos and Mission Hills high schools

Now more than ever, members of the community can, indeed must, make a difference in the educational process.
